Following a 4 year enlistment in the U. S. Coast Guard as a Hospital Corpsman, Dr. Byland returned to his undergraduate college studies at Ferris State College majoring in Applied Biology. He continued his education with 4 years of graduate studies at Michigan College of Optometry on the Ferris State University Campus. He graduated with “High Distinction” and was his class Valedictorian in 1982.
He began practice in Fremont, MI with the long established practice of Wayne Oosting, O.D., eventually assuming that practice when Dr. Oosting retired. Dr. Byland was on faculty at the Michigan College of Optometry as a Clinical Associate for 9 years. He began a second office in Kent City, MI in 1992 and still maintains a part time office there.
His professional interests are primary care optometry with emphasis on senior care and contact lenses. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, Michigan Optometric Association and regional societies.
Dr. Byland is married with 2 children (grown up now) and a granddaughter. His favorite activities include traveling for scuba diving (a certified dive master), underwater photography, and golfing.
